NORAM® DEBUTS NEW PAC ACTUATOR II

PAC II Linear Actuator
More Noram Information

Noram® Clutch recently introduced the company’s New Pressurized Air Control (PAC) Actuator II at the 56th National Design Engineering Show and Conference. "In response to customer requests for a larger and more powerful actuator, our research and development team has designed yet another technologically superior NORAM power transfer solution," NORAM® president Jeff Hargarten stated.

At the Show, NORAM demonstrated the multiple benefits the 3-3/4 inch stroke PAC Actuator II provides in lawn and garden equipment applications. "One of the foremost advantages of the PAC Actuator II is that it requires no costly system upgrades or special engine modifications," Hargarten explained. "Its distinctively smooth engagement surpasses traditional electric clutches by eliminating severe shock loads. The PAC Actuator II is capable of engaging a mower deck at idle speed, enabling compliance with stringent ‘no cut in reverse’ mandates without engine shutdown."

The PAC Actuator can be paired with one of NORAM's existing clutches, effectively turning NORAM's products from a mechanical clutch into an electric one. It can also be used to engage the decking systems of riding mowers, lowering their blades to the cutting surface.

"The PAC Actuator operates on compressed air, instead of magnets, drawing less power from a motor than other electric clutches. This pneumatic control leaves more power for the motor to use for other applications," Hargarten said.

"This can be a very inexpensive electric clutch," Hargarten said. "It's being tested to engage the mowing decks at several of our OEM (original equipment manufacturer) customers. It's also being used on some materials handling equipment and some floor buffing equipment.

NORAM’s PAC Actuator II requires only 1/2 amp rather than the typical 5-10 amp draw for electrical clutches. "This significantly reduces electrical loads," continued Hargarten. "Some of the other features of the innovative design include recessed terminals to guard against breakage and enhance longevity, and single button engagement at no extra cost to the equipment manufacturer. For fail safe operation, the PAC Actuator II defaults to the Off position when the 12 volt power supply is shut off or exhausted."

Hargarten concluded, "NORAM® is pleased to now offer two choices in Actuators. The New PAC Actuator II broadens the scope of power transfer applications we initially provided with the original 2 inch PAC Actuator. Each can be utilized in conjunction with NORAM’s patented clutch brake. And, as stand alone units, the Actuators provide the least expensive push button activation in the industry."
